Summerless in Seattle: Temps steer clear of 80-degree mark

Noting the unseasonably cool and rainy summer the greater Puget Sound area has experienced so far in 2011, Komo News meteorologist Scott Sistek did some digging to find out how many days temperatures have hit over 80 degrees.

His results were not so surprising to anyone who’s turned an eye to the sky to attempt to read what the weather is doing next.

“The mission: Find out how many minutes it’s been at 80 degrees or warmer this year — what I would call a true warm summer day in Seattle” he wrote on the Komo News website. “The answer: 78 minutes.”

Sistek writes that he used readings from a minute-to minute-log created by the University of Washington’s Atmospheric Sciences Department. That department keeps a temperature reading device on top of its building. According to the UW log, it’s been above 80 degrees twice in Seattle so far.

“12 minutes on July 2, and 66 minutes on July 6,” Sistek wrote.

Sistek wrote that temperatures have edged over 75 degrees for 18 hours and 48 minutes so far in 2011, “more than two-thirds of a day,” as he glibly puts it.

To compare our 78 minutes of 80-plus degrees:

• The average feature length movie was 129 minutes during the 2000s, according to an IMDB.com study.

• The average duration of a Major League Baseball game is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

• The Sunday morning broadcast of ESPN’s Sportscenter is 120 minutes.
