Student sentenced after spiking Federal Way teacher’s coffee

A Federal Way School District student pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault for spiking his teacher’s coffee with ipecac. The student, age 14, was sentenced to eight months of community supervision and 24 hours of community service. He was credited with 31 days in lockup for time already served while he waited in jail.

Sentences can range anywhere from zero to 30 days in jail and up to 100 hours community service, so the boy did receive a sentence at the top range, King County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Dan Donohoe said.

Two Sequoyah Middle School students were expelled, arrested and booked into the King County Youth Service Center on April 13 after they allegedly poured ipecac into their teacher’s coffee. Ipecac syrup is a substance that causes vomiting.

The juvenile is still awaiting a sentence for his indecent exposure charge that stemmed from an earlier incident and will be heard in June. His pending case was the reason why the court did not allow his release earlier.

Another 13-year-old boy was charged with the same crime and will have his case heard on May 22.
