Todd Beamer Street Law forums
From 7:45 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 25, students in the street law program will host a mock trial about a criminal case involving a stabbing of an officer with a Swiss army knife. Justice Madsen from the State Supreme Court will preside and will speak about the importance and process of trials.
From 7:45 to 9:30 a.m. Dec. 11, the forum will focus on consumer laws including credit cards, deceptive practices, consumer protection and smart consumers. Doug Walsh, head of consumer protection at the Attorney General’s office, Laura Fitzgerald of the Better Business Bureau, and David Clancy from KIRO TV in the public consumer department will participate. Other classes at Todd Beamer and in the district are encouraged to attend.
All forums take place in the Great Hall at Todd Beamer, 35999 16th Ave. S.
Sherwood Forest students looking for spare change
Sherwood Forest Elementary School students are participating in the “Penny Harvest,” which runs until Dec. 1. They join more than 900 schools that will begin scouring their homes and neighborhoods for pennies as part of this national service learning project.
Student council members distributed a cloth collection sack to each classroom, as well as brochures for every student to take home. The goal is to fill every sack to the 30-pound line by Dec. 1, which adds up to $50. Each class will identify causes they care about, and the student council will use this information to determine which organizations receive the money that is collected.
Last year students in 54 schools in the Seattle Metro area collected $64,354.02, made grants to 82 different community-based organizations, and completed 14 service projects. For more information, go to www.pennyharvest.org/seattleneighbor.
Soap for Hope
Students at Olympic View Elementary are asking for donations of new and unopened toiletry items for the homeless in Federal Way. Suggested donations include shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream and soap. These can be in either full size containers or travel size.
