Federal Way resident Randall Smith announced his candidacy for the Federal Way City Council, this week, with the position to be declared at a later time.
Smith has lived in Federal Way since 1966 and is a 1978 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. He earned a technical certificate from Green River Community College in Aviation Technology and worked in the airline industry as a flight dispatcher for eight years and is currently employed with Shuttle Express as a commercial bus driver.
Currently, Smith serves Federal Way as a diversity commissioner, a civil service commissioner and is on the Instructional Curriculum Committee for Federal Way Public Schools. He previously served as a commissioner on the Parks and Recreation Commission and on the Federal Way High School Facility’s Committee.
According to a press release, if elected his priorities would be regional transportation, economic development and public safety.
“Public safety is the key to Federal Way’s success,” Smith said in a press release. “Last year was a challenging year for our police department, and we were in the news quite a few times because of crime. We need to do everything to make sure our city has every resource at their hand to keep us safe. It is vital for our growth and sustainability.”
He said his other concerns are the growing homeless population and using renewable energy at city facilities.
