Federal Way police are investigating a convicted sex offender believed to have impersonated a police officer on at least two occasions.
On Nov. 2, the 29-year-old Tacoma man was arrested on a previous warrant after police tracked him down from a witness report. The witness said a person driving a car with blinking blue and red lights sped and cut him off, nearly causing an accident.
The maroon or red 2001 Ford Taurus with front end damage matched the description of a car from another case that was reported a month earlier.
At around 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, police were dispatched to a suspicious subject call. Two women pulled over their cars in the 4600 block of SW 320th St. to help out a stranded motorist in an intersection. But as they did so, the maroon Taurus with blue and red flashing lights pulled up from behind and a white male stepped out, according to the police report.
One of the witnesses “immediately noticed a black handgun holstered to the driver’s right hip.”
He kept his hands on top of the gun and approached the women, asking, “What seems to be the problem here?”
The suspect was wearing a Tapout shirt, black jeans and did not have any police or security markings on his clothing, the witnesses said.
But as soon as one of the witness’s husband arrived, the man got back into his vehicle and sped off toward Park at Dash Point Apartments with his blue and red lights activated.
“A vehicle in front of the Taurus pulled over thinking the Taurus vehicle was a police officer,” the police report states. “[The witness] said she is concerned he is impersonating a police officer and will try to do something worse in the future.”
Police were able to run the car’s license plate and found the car was registered to a woman; however, after a check officers discovered it wasn’t at the address listed on the vehicle registration.
After the second report, police located the car at the man’s residence. The police report states he exited his house wearing a shirt labeled “security” and wearing a gun holster, handcuff case, police boots and was in possession of a tactical vest.
Before police arrested him on his warrant, he claimed he was a bounty hunter.
The man’s Department of Corrections warrant was for failing to register as a sex offender in Pierce County.
Pierce County court documents state he was convicted of a felony sex offense and kidnapping in September 2008 and sentenced to one year in jail.
He also has two felony convictions for residential burglary and unlawful possession of a firearm and a domestic violence warrant pending in Olympia.
Cathy Schrock with Federal Way police said police obtained a search warrant and conducted a search Wednesday on the suspect’s car. They found police equipment in the vehicle, including two sets of handcuffs and a key, a tactical vest, among other items. They also found a gun. Police have probable cause to charge him with a felon in possession of a firearm, Schrock said.
The Mirror does not name suspects until they are formally charged and will update this report as more information is available.
