Five finalists for the vacant Federal Way School Board district four position were selected from seven applicants last week.

The position was left vacant when school board member Tom Madden resigned last month.

Federal Way area residents Jim Storvick, Angela Griffin, Chris Brown, Paul Kalchik and Heidi Gailey will interview for the position on June 11.

Angela Griffin

Griffin is currently the executive director of the Federal Way YMCA. She has worked with the Federal Way Public Schools’ family partnership office and the Federal Way Diversity Commission. She said the school board’s goal should be to set students up for success.

“It should be to make sure we have policies in place as a district that really guarantee academic achievement for students,” Griffin said.

Heidi Gailey

Gailey is currently a homemaker who has four children ranging from ages 12 to 24. She has served in a variety of PTA positions and is a Federal Way Advancing Leadership graduate. She said the school board’s goal should be to gain confidence from the parents within the district.

“For a while there was a lack of confidence in the school board, and I think it’s important to develop confidence on the parents’ part,” Gailey said.

Jim Storvick

Storvick is a banker and has served in a variety of community leadership positions including vice chair of finance for the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a Federal Way School Board member from 1997 through 2001, but did not run for re-election after his two children were born. He said the current challenges the board faces are similar to what the board faced when he was a member.

“It’s the same kind of issues we’ve had in the past, which is balancing expectations with resources,” Storvick said. “It’s not necessarily getting more money. It’s using the money that you have wisely.”

Chris Brown

Brown is currently the corporate safety director at Lloyd Enterprises. He serves on the City of Federal Way Diversity Commission and is a past member of the vocational education advisory committee for the Federal Way School District. He said he could help the school board redirect some of its efforts to better serve the community.

“I think one of their largest challenges right now is just delivery of a product to the citizens of the Federal Way School District, both the students and the parents,” Brown said.

Paul Kalchik

Kalchik is currently a campaign coordinator for District 30 State Rep. Skip Priest. He has served as student legislative liaison and student body president at Highline Community College as well as several civic engagement efforts in the Slavic community.

In his application, Kalchik noted that he is active in the Russian/Ukrainian community in Federal Way and that his presence would help diversify the board.

The board will interview the five finalists at a special meeting at 7 p.m. June 11 at the Educational Service Center. The meeting is open to the public and a school board member will be selected that night.

The newest member of the school board will be sworn in at a regular meeting June 24 and will serve until November 2009.
