Federal Way resident and former Auburn mayor Bob Roegner has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the Highline Community College Board of Trustees.

Roegner will replace Federal Way resident Barbara Reid, whose first term ended in September. Roegner was appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire, and his term will last until September 2015.

Highline is one of the largest community colleges in the state and serves an area that includes the Federal Way, Tukwila and Highline school districts. In general, trustees oversee programming, budgeting, the hiring of the college president, leases and sales, capital projects and the lending and borrowing of money. The board is made up of five trustees: two from Federal Way, two from Des Moines and one from Normandy Park. However, trustees serve at-large. Trustees receive a per diem of $200 per meeting; there are 11 meetings per year.

Roegner’s term officially began Jan. 3, but he will take part in his first meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 13. Reid began her term Oct. 1, 2008, and has a long history of service in Federal Way: she was a chair of the Federal Way Parks and Recreation Commission, a president of the Federal Way Symphony, vice president of Federal Way Festival Days and was a member of Citizens for Federal Way Schools.
