Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) announced on April 17 the Community Project Funding requests he submitted to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration in the Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations bill, which include a Federal Way project.
The requested funding is intended for 15 community projects across the Ninth District, in areas such as affordable housing, public transportation, criminal justice and public safety, mental and behavioral health care, workforce and education, small business, economic empowerment, and more.
“The appropriations process is an important way to send federal dollars back to our districts and make investments that will strengthen our communities,” Smith stated. The 15 community projects for consideration serve individuals and families who need support, Smith added, from survivors of sexual assault, to people reentering the community from incarceration, to immigrant and refugee communities. “I am thrilled to submit these projects for consideration, and I will push to get this funding across the finish line to advance the incredible work of these organizations and strengthen the Ninth District.”
One of the requests seeks $2.5 million for a Downtown Civic and Community Space in the City of Federal Way.
Federal Way is in the early stages of creating a true downtown community space to house organizations and small businesses, and create community. The Community Project Funding would aid with the construction or renovation of an existing building and open a public space to act as a central gathering space, curated to serve as a center for civic and social engagement.
This type of public gathering space does not exist in Federal Way’s downtown area currently.
“The city of Federal Way greatly appreciates Congressman Smith’s support for our new Civic and Community Space in downtown Federal Way,” stated Mayor Jim Ferrell. “The new community space will be a vital resource for the residents of Federal Way, providing a safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and connect with each other. The space will offer a wide range of activities and programs, including educational workshops, cultural events, community markets and recreational activities. This project is an important step in our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of life for our residents and visitors and build a more connected, engaged, and thriving community.”
The 15 requests submitted to the House Appropriations Committee is the first step in the process and does not guarantee they will be funded.
