Relay for Life of Federal Way starts Friday at 6 p.m.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Federal Way event will take place on Friday, May 20, at Saghalie Middle School in Federal Way (33914 19th Ave. SW).

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Federal Way event will take place on Friday, May 20, at Saghalie Middle School in Federal Way (33914 19th Ave. SW).

Opening ceremonies for the event begin at 6 p.m. It will last until 12 p.m. the following day.

Teams will be introduced and the Olympic flame will be lit during the ceremonies. A survivor lap featuring cancer survivors will start off the relay.

Starting at 7 p.m., each hour interval will have a different theme. Some themes include saluting the troops, Disney hour, pajama hour, zombie hour and country music hour.

The Luminaria Ceremony will be held at 9 p.m. Luminaria bags and candles are lit to honor loved ones who have died or are fighting the disease.

Each team at the event is expected to have at least one member walking the track at all times.

Prizes will be awarded throughout the event.

Last year, over 40 teams at the event raised $58,484.
