At 1:35 p.m. Tuesday police were dispatched to a residential burglary in progress in the 2100 block of Southwest 326th Street.
A juvenile and others were in the home when two adult male suspects unlawfully entered the home, police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said. An officer was in the area at the time of the call and made it to the scene in time to verbally confront the suspects.
One suspect complied with the officer’s instructions. The second suspect fled toward a waiting 1998 maroon Aerostar van. A female was driving the vehicle.
The female and the male suspect directed the vehicle toward the officer. The officer, a 24-year law enforcement veteran, responded by firing multiple shots at the vehicle, according to Schrock. The officer was not struck or otherwise harmed.
The suspects escaped the scene. It is unknown if they were injured by the officer’s shots. The van was later located abandoned around 5 p.m. The second male suspect and the female suspect driving the van have not been located.
The incident caused police to block off 21st Street Southwest from approximately Southwest 325th Street to approximately Southwest 333rd Street. Traffic was diverted through a nearby neighborhood. A portion of the street remained closed at 4:30 p.m.
The van will be processed for evidence. The officer involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard policy. Federal Way police are conducting a full investigation.
