Mirror staff reports:
Federal Way police joined a manhunt Tuesday night for a suspect accused of stealing a vehicle, then fleeing on foot through a neighborhood near S. 288th Street and Military Road South.
Lakewood police had already pursued the suspect into city limits after the vehicle, a stolen Dodge Neon, exited I-5 at S. 320th Street.
Federal Way officers were notified of the pursuit at 7:47 p.m. Aug. 6. Federal Way officers deployed spike strips near the entrance of Camelot Square mobile home park on Military Road South. The spikes deflated three of the suspect vehicle’s tires.
The vehicle slowed down and turned westbound on South 288th Street, where a Federal Way officer used his squad car to stop the vehicle with a technique called a PIT maneuver (pursuit immobilization technique), police said.
The driver then fled on foot and through residential neighborhoods. The passenger of the vehicle was detained.
A K-9 track ensued with the assistance of the King County Sheriff’s Office Guardian One helicopter, according to Federal Way police. The driver was not located.
Police identified the driver as Michael Dietrick, 23, who had a felony warrant from the Department of Corrections.
Lakewood police took custody of the passenger and took over the investigation.
