The officer found the woman walking down the sidewalk carrying a couple of bags. The officer stopped the suspect, who was later identified as a 42-year-old woman. The officer observed a priority mail envelope protruding from a blue bag she was carrying and asked her who the mail belonged to. She said, “I am not too good at this.”
She admitted to going through other people’s mailboxes. Police recovered 27 pieces of stolen mail that belonged to nine victims from addresses within a few blocks of each other. Police arrested the woman, who said her friend told her that if she stole a bunch of mail for him he would show her how to make a lot of money with the mail. Mail theft charges against the woman are pending.
Police shoot man carrying knife: At an unknown time on April 26 at 32100 Pacific Highway S., witnesses reported a suspicious subject standing in the middle of the street with a knife. Several officers responded and noticed the man was standing in the middle lane of Pacific Highway South yelling at a stopped car. The man’s arms were in the air and he appeared to be trying to fight the vehicles that were stopped in the roadway. He yelled, “C’mon! C’mon!” while pounding his chest and flailing his arms around.
An officer ordered the man to laid down on the sidewalk, however, he walked back to the sidewalk and sat down on the retaining wall. Police could see that he was holding a folding knife in his right hand.
They told him to drop the knife on the ground and he refused, yelling, “Don’t kill me! Are you going to shoot me?” After an officer told the man to drop the knife about 10 times, he finally did so but then grabbed the knife again, opening and closing the blade, while yelling, “The knife isn’t even open.”
As more units arrived, he dropped the knife in a grassy area but refused to get onto the ground.
Two officers deployed their rifles and a third officer deployed his or her handgun, pending an opportunity to take the man into custody. Officers directed the man to lie down on the ground with his palms up. He refused to and moved back and forth towards the knife, saying, “Just give me a minute” and “Let me talk to my family first.” He refused to comply with police orders, who told him he was under arrest.
Officers advised the man to comply with their orders or they would shoot him with a 40 mm “less lethal rubber round.” The man continued refusing to comply and placed his hands on the ground, then put them up “as if he was about to get off the ground,” according to the report. He told police he wanted to call his family before he “was killed.”
An officer deployed a 40mm and struck the man in his right thigh. The man then complied with police’s instructions and lay down on the ground. The 37-year-old Spanaway man refused medical attention and told police, “Man, why didn’t you guys just shoot me with a real gun?” He was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing a law enforcement officer, and was booked into SCORE jail.
