Federal Way police are still investigating the possible embezzlement of “thousands of dollars” from at least three local sports organizations, according to police officials.

“There is an ongoing investigation,” said police spokesman Raymond Bunk. “There has been no arrest made.”

Police are compiling evidence against a single suspect who handled money for the Federal Way sports leagues, Bunk said. Police are not naming the suspect because no charges have been filed.

“There is just one person at this time,” Bunk said.

Police have been investigating the possible embezzlement/fraud charges for “two or three weeks,” Bunk said.

Bunk couldn’t give a specific timeframe as to when or what charges will be filed against the suspect because Federal Way detectives have only officially spoken with two of the affected sports organizations as of Monday afternoon, he said.

The Mirror confirmed that the Federal Way American Little League was cooperating with the police investigation. The suspect handled money for that organization.

In Washington, fraud and embezzlement cases involving more than $250 are felony offenses, meaning potential punishment includes one year or longer in prison.

Federal Way American Little League is an all-volunteer association that has already started practices and games for the 2009 spring baseball season. Fees for players vary on age, but range from $50 per kid in T-ball to $150 a player at the junior and senior Little League level.
