Park Pals moved a step closer to building a rain shelter at Federal Way’s off-leash dog park.

Last December, the non-profit Park Pals joined forces with Petco’s annual Tree of Hope fundraiser to offer pet photos with Santa.

Bolstered by other donations from Petco customers, the store presented a check to Park Pals on Friday for $5,493.63.

The proceeds will go toward construction of a rain shelter. Park Pals still needs to raise more money for the gazebo-like structure, which will measure 14 feet by 16 feet and cost roughly $25,000.

Michael Jankowski, general manager for Federal Way Petco, said Park Pals plays a vital role for pet owners in the community.

Some of the non-profit organization’s past projects include the installation of a new bench, a doggie drinking fountain and engraved “tribute bricks” at the 10-acre French Lake Park.

“I was really impressed with what they’re doing,” Jankowski said. “We just want to get the word out and get some exposure for the park. Anything we can do to help.”

Established seven years ago, the off-leash area at French Lake Park is located on 1st Avenue South between South 320th Street and South 312th Street.
