Several events celebrating and commemorating Juneteenth are scheduled for this month.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the U.S. that celebrates the anniversary of the legal order issued June 19, 1865, that proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas. It commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves across the country and has been called “America’s second Independence Day.”
Friday, June 16: The Juneteenth flag is raised at Federal Way City Hall at noon.
Saturday, June 17: Phenomenal She / Game of Life sponsors their third annual Juneteenth Celebration at Town Square Park from noon to 4 p.m. The event will include outdoor festivities, vendors, local performances, a basketball tournament, a DJ and more.
Monday, June 19: The second annual Juneteenth Unity Walk will start at Celebration Park and proceed down the BPA trail. Check-in is 8 a.m., the opening ceremony is at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m.
Also that day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Creating Legacy Wealth LLC presents “Juneteenth Representation Matters,” a free event at Dumas Bay Centre, featuring artists, dancers, spoken word presentations, panelists and more.
