A missing 70-year-old Federal Way man has been found safe, police announced Friday afternoon.
David W. Leek, 70, went for a walk on the BPA Trail in Federal Way around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon and did not return home, according to a social media post by his daughter, Ariana Stanley. Stanley said her father has Alzheimer’s disease and a passion for the outdoors.
Leek was found near the Tacoma waterfront around 4 p.m. June 5, police said.
“He’s safe and sound,” Stanley told the Mirror Friday night. “He’s a bit weathered and stiff and sore but otherwise fine thankfully!”
Tacoma Police found Leek on Dock Street along the Tacoma waterfront, she said.
“They initially called AMR to transport to an ER because they weren’t aware he was a missing person and thankfully the EMT recognized him through the grapevine of our work and by my post,” she said, adding that he is a “very fit and active” 70-year-old.
The Pierce County medic had asked about Leek earlier in the day, and was able to call Stanley to confirm it was him.
A nearby business along Dock Street gave Leek some food and water, Stanley wrote in a social media post to update the community. Leek doesn’t remember where he slept, if he did, or why he didn’t ask for help, she said.
According to Google Maps, the fastest non-highway route to the location he was found is approximately 10 miles.
“…Thank you guys all SO MUCH for sharing and searching and networking to get him home,” Stanley wrote.
Shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday, Federal Way officers conducted an extensive area search last night at the time the department was notified of Leek’s disappearance, said FWPD Cmdr. Kurt Schwan.
Leek was entered in the national database as a missing person June 4.
