The Miles for Meso 5K race in Federal Way welcomed 160 participants on the morning of July 4.
Returning in-person for its 11th year, the event offered run, walk, wheelchair and virtual race options. Several people took home top placements and prizes, all while raising funds for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
Jameson Karmell, 19 of Federal Way, won the 5K run with a time of 17:52 (5:46 pace). Karmell also won the Male 16-19 division, followed by 16-year-old Stephen Filippov (Federal Way) with a time of 22:36 and 16-year-old Patrick Hopkins (Puyallup) with a time of 43:55.

The race is held in memory of Dick Dyhrman, a Weyerhaeuser Company geologist; Bud Hatley, a Federal Way school district athletic director; Bob Stewart, a Federal Way High School teacher and coach; and other Washington residents who have died from mesothelioma, according to event organizers. Mesothelioma is a cancer caused from asbestos.
This year, the Miles for Meso race raised $12,355 in donations. All proceeds are donated to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation to support patients and their families, provide research grants and create national awareness.
