Diane Holtz, the longest tenured teacher at the Federal Way Public Academy (FWPA), passed away Jan. 20 after a long battle with cancer. She was 61.

A memorial service will be held for Holtz at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Cavalry Community Church (15116 Gary St. E., Sumner, WA 98390).

According to the district, Holtz had been a teacher with Federal Way Public Schools since 1991, when she started at Silver Lake Elementary School. Holtz spent a brief time at Saghalie Middle School before landing at the FWPA in 2000. Described as “instrumental” in formulating the seventh-grade curriculum at FWPA, Holtz was also well known for her efforts in the seventh-grade yearbook program, and helping starting and maintaining a number of computer labs at FWPA.

The district indicates Holtz’s family wishes for the memorial to be one of a celebration of her life, and not a somber remembrance. Those who wish to attend are encouraged to wear Hawaiian attire because that was Holtz’s favorite vacation spot, according to the family. Those seeking to give or leave a gift of some kind are encouraged to donate to Federal Way Public Academy or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
