Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers. Fatal teen collisions in our state are more than double the rate of all other drivers combined. This isn’t because teens are irresponsible or bad. The extraordinary crash rates stems from inattentiveness and lack of experience.

I sponsored legislation to implement an Intermediate Driver’s License program in Washington. The bill increased instruction requirements and eliminated driver distractions so teens could gain valuable experience and become safer drivers. I successfully led a coalition of organizations including the PTA, State Troopers Association, MADD, Washington State Medical Association, AAA and others to pass the legislation. The bill became law on June 8, 2000.

As the result of the Intermediate Driver’s License program, teenage car crash deaths and crippling injuries have been reduced by 48 percent.

This year, I strengthened restrictions so that teens with instructional permits or intermediate licenses cannot use any wireless communication device unless it is to report illegal activity, summon emergency help, or prevent injury to a person or property. Teens using a wireless device while driving can be cited as a primary offense.

I am extremely proud of the outcomes of this legislation. It has saved lives. I’m honored to work with the organizations that helped pass this legislation, and of the support I have received from parents, law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service professionals across the state.

Fast facts: Eide, a Democrat, is the Majority Floor Leader of the State Senate now serving in her third term.

Tony Moore

I’m most proud of leading the way for the recently passed academic acceleration policy. Clearly, the biggest civil rights issue of our time is providing a quality education for every child. The hope of the future is in the next generation. Making sure every child has an equal opportunity to thrive academically is the best way to serve this community. I am proud of the team effort the board, administrators, teachers and staff demonstrated in this great undertaking. I know we will enjoy the benefits of this policy for decades.

Fast facts: Moore, a Republican, currently serves as president of the Federal Way School Board.
