A man rode his bicycle into a Federal Way towing yard, stole a vehicle and subsequently rammed it through the gates, making a movie-like escape.
On July 29, Mountain View Towing at 33125 15th Ave. S. reported an auto theft in which one of their vehicles in the tow yard was stolen and then used to ram through the security gates, causing $2,000 in damage.
According to a Federal Way Police Department case report obtained from a public records request, the man, who appeared to be transient, entered the tow yard on a green BMX-style bike through a gate, which was opened by a parked tow truck, keeping the gate open.
The man entered a recently impounded dark blue Nissan Altima, then attempted to ram through the side of the gate next to the tow truck parked in the gate’s opening. After the man failed to go through the gate, partially pushing it down, he attempted to ram through the gate again. On his second attempt, the man drove over a post on the gate that he had pushed down on his first attempt. After hitting the post, the Nissan Altima was briefly propelled into the air before landing, and the driver made an escape.
At the time of the impound, the vehicle had no license plate. But by searching the VIN number, responding officers found the name of the owner, who was not the man who had driven away in the vehicle. The person who reported the incident said he did not want to press charges for the stolen vehicle, but if the man was caught, he did want to cooperate because of the damaged gate.
The BMX-style bike the man rode into the tow yard was requested to be left at the scene because it served no evidentiary value. Officers said in the report they could not find any video identifying the suspect. Additionally, they checked Safe City cameras from around the area, but still did not identify the suspect. At the time of this report, no suspect has been found.
