Major weekend traffic: I-405 in Renton closed late Friday to early Monday

Southbound I-405 will be closed the entire weekend, while northbound will only be for a few hours early Sunday morning.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that I-405 in Renton will be closed this upcoming weekend.

Travelers are advised to plan ahead now as there will be a full weekend closure of southbound Interstate 405 starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 between Coal Creek Parkway Southeast (Exit 10) and Northeast 30th Street (Exit 6).

Southbound I-405 will reopen at 4 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16., which WSDOT says will be in time for the morning commute.

There will also be a brief closure of northbound I-405, which will begin at midnight and into the morning of Sunday, Sept. 15., reopening at 4 a.m. The four-hour closure will stretch from Northeast 44th Street (Exit 7) to Coal Creek Parkway Southeast (Exit 10).

Contractor crews will switch traffic to the new bridge and conduct paving work on southbound I-405 and they will also perform utility work on northbound I-405, says WSDOT.

Travelers who are heading north or south will follow detour signage around the work zone, which will utilize Northeast 30th Street, Lake Washington Boulevard Southeast, Monterey Place Northeast, Southeast May Creek Park Drive, Coal Creek Parkway Southeast, and Newcastle Way.

WSDOT warns that these detours will not be able to accommodate normal I-405 traffic, stating that “travelers are advised to ‘know before you go,’ travel during off-peak hours or, if possible, delay discretionary travel to help minimize backups.”
