Local author Helen Collier shared her storytelling wisdom May 15 at Lake Dolloff Elementary.

She explained the components of a story — characters, conflict, climax, ending — and even improvised a tale about her sparkling cowboy hat. She read from her book “Looking for Trouble” with Meow the Louisiana catfish and encouraged the kids to come up with their own ending.

“A painter uses a paintbrush to paint a picture,” she said. “A writer uses words.”

Collier shared advice on bullies and staying out of trouble. She also reminded dozens of kids to say to themselves “I am important” — a message that the kids waved on paper plates.
