On Sept. 16, 2012, the Light of Christ Community Garden, located at 34249 21st Ave. SW in Federal Way, had their garden dedication and ribbon cutting. (SEE PHOTOS)

In attendance was Federal Way Mayor Skip Priest, many of the city council members and many individuals and families from the community.

The goal of the garden is to cultivate the spirit of community, neighborhood and diversity by growing food collaboratively and sustainably.

The mission of the garden is to bring people together to work in unity for the benefit others. Our neighbors of all faiths or no faith, ethnic groups, youth, elderly, able bodied and the disabled are all welcomed to participate in the management, building and harvest of the garden. Community participation and improvement are primary objectives.

The garden has been built, planted and harvested by individuals, families and groups in our community. There are five Eagle Scout projects from BSA Troop 336 throughout the garden and four memorials.

There was a late start in building and planting due to a cold, wet spring. In spite of these challenges, numerous individuals and families have been helped on a regular basis along with community reach out programs receiving fresh, organic produce from the garden.
