Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) and the Korean Ministry of Education signed an agreement earlier this week that will allow students who demonstrate Korean language proficiency to earn high school credit.

The agreement will allow students to earn up to three credits in “world languages” and will be administered by the Korean Consulate General’s Office in Seattle. Students will take the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), and the Consulate General’s office will report back results to FWPS.

Among the dignitaries gathered on Dec. 6 for the signing of the agreement were former Federal Way City Councilman Mike Park, FWPS Superintendent Rob Neu, Washington State TOPIK Chairperson Sulja Warnick, National Institute for International Exchange Director Sung Soo Hong and Seattle Korean Consulate Vice Consul Da Eun. Also present were Federal Way Mayor Skip Priest, FWPS Teaching for Learning Executive Director Marie Verhaar, FWPS Executive Director of Secondary Education Vince Blauser, and Federal Way Public Academy principal Kurt Lauer.
