William “Bill” Martin, known for decades of community involvement in Federal Way, died June 8 at Franciscan Hospice House. He was 91.

Born in Tacoma, Martin graduated from Federal Way High School and joined the Army. He was a World War II veteran. He and his wife, Jeanne, were married nearly 70 years.

Martin was manager of the Federal Way Water District for 20 years and simultaneously served as Federal Way Fire Department Commissioner for 28 years. He was called Mr. Federal Way by many for his community involvement, which included volunteering for Group Health, and participating in the Federal Way Kiwanis and St. Vincent de Paul Parish.

Martin’s service was held June 13, and the funeral motorcade passed by the fire station on 1st Avenue South with the department personnel paying their respects.

Surviving are his sons Bill (Marlane), Mike (Jan), Steve (Vicki), Pat, Jim (Rachel), and daughter Sue (Steve) Drake, and sister Barbara Gruber. Martin has 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The Federal Way Kiwanis Club has dedicated its July 19 charity golf tournament to Martin and fellow club member Don Barrows, who died of cancer in May.

Martin was a charter member of the Federal Way Kiwanis Club, which started in 1973. He was involved in planning the club’s annual charity golf tournament. His contacts in the community helped secure sponsors and teams to make the tournament a success.

Barrows was a longtime Kiwanis member. He joined in 1993, served as club secretary for 10 years, and was a Key Club advisor. In 2012, he received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Service from Kiwanis International.
