Homeless people in Federal Way will be a little bit warmer thanks to the efforts of students in the AVID program at Kilo Middle School.

Kilo AVID students made 63 scarves, two blankets and one hat to donate to families in need who are served by the Federal Way Multi-Service Center.

The students made the items with fleece that was donated to the class. A teacher at Kilo taught the students to measure the fleece, cut it and add trim.

The scarf project was part of the Kilo AVID program’s weekly public service days. Students worked on their scarves every Friday, and many came in during lunch or study hall to make additional scarves.

On Friday, students delivered the items to the Multi-Service Center and went on a tour of the food bank. Manuela Ginnett, housing program director for the Multi-Service Center, told the students that some of the families who would receive the items included children their own age.

That news pleased Kiersten Dahlen, who made a purple Hannah Montana blanket to donate.

“I just love it when kids do stuff,” Ginnett said.

Working to help homeless or low-income families could have special meaning for the AVID students, many of whom come from low-income families themselves.

“Some of this could potentially hit home for them,” Ginnett said.

The scarves and blankets are extra special to the families who get them because most items they receive from the clothing bank have been used, Ginnett said.

“It’s always nice when they can get something new, homemade,” she said. “That’s always nice.”
