The Federal Way Historical Society’s Heritage Center at the Steel Lake Park Annex will open this summer as an interactive museum of life from the 1930s through 1970s, and the public is invited to an open house June 29 to see for themselves.
Exploring “life before the internet,” the program will show visitors the old-school ways of many household tasks, like grinding coffee by hand, and demonstrate what life was like without access to the world wide web.
Historical Society president Mary Ehlis said at a recent city council meeting that the event will include fun and food.
“When I talk to kids, they’re like ‘What? What would I do without a (cell) phone?’ ” Ehlis said at the June 20 city council meeting. “Well, we’ll come show you. … Come out and join in the fun.”
The open house is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 29, and the Heritage Center is open Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
The Historical Society has also restored the Denny Cabin at the West Hylebos Wetlands to what it might have looked like at the turn of the 20th century. Along with the Barker Cabin, the buildings provide another way to physically engage with history.
The cabins are open the third Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
