Haiti fundraisers continue at Federal Way schools

Several schools are still holding fundraisers to help the people of Haiti, who were devastated this month by a 7.0 earthquake.

• In addition to the coin drive going on at Todd Beamer High School, Enterprise Elementary is having a shoe drive in memory of Molly Hightower and to support the people in Haiti. The drive runs through Feb. 5. Molly Hightower is the niece of Enterprise principal Margot Hightower. The school wants to support the orphanage that Molly worked at and the thousands of other people who need a pair of shoes. Send only casual shoes such as work boots or tennis shoes. • Illahee Middle School’s fifth-grade class is also collecting shoes to send to Haiti in memory of Molly Hightower. Donations can be dropped off in the Illahee office, 36001 1st Ave. S., during school hours (7:20 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.).

• Sequoyah Middle School’s language arts class started a water drive with a goal of collecting 10,000 bottles of water for the project, which they have named H2O 2 HAITI. So far, they have brought in 278 bottles. The school is at 3425 S. 360th St. Call (253) 945-3670.

• Decatur High School’s leadership class is sponsoring a community garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Performing Arts Center of the school. Donations are needed and can be delivered to the school’s main office. If you need to drop off your donations later than 2:30 p.m., or if you have questions, contact Krys Ellis at (253) 945-5282.

All proceeds from the sale will go to World Concern to help with the disaster in Haiti. The students involved selected this charity because, in their research, they determined that it had the lowest percentage of administrative costs versus money actually going to the people in need.

• The staff and students at Kilo Middle School are conducting a school-wide fundraising event to support the victims of the Haiti earthquake. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross on behalf of Molly Hightower. Jordon Hightower, Molly’s sister, was a student teacher and softball coach at Kilo last year. • Federal Way’s World Vision is helping with the relief efforts in Haiti following a devastating earthquake earlier this month.
