Hacker uses Xbox to extort father and son | FW crime blotter

At 9:26 a.m. Feb. 9 in the 500 block of SW 335th Street, a man called to report that his son's Xbox account had been hacked.

Following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:

• Father and son targeted by hackers: At 9:26 a.m. Feb. 9 in the 500 block of SW 335th Street, a man called to report that his son’s Xbox account had been hacked, and that the hacker had been attempting to extort the man and his son for the last six months. The most recent attempt had the hacker asking for $500 to be placed into a PayPal account. According to the report, the Microsoft Security team had taken over the case for the time being.

• Dead dog found near trail: At 1:19 p.m. Feb. 9 in the 32000 block of 1st Avenue South, passersby reported a large, decomposing dog carcass near a footpath.

• Son admits stealing from mom: At 9:53 a.m. Feb. 9 in the 31000 block of 8th Avenue South, a juvenile admitted to taking his mother’s debit card without permission a number of times, for the purpose of making cash withdrawals from her account.

• Woman with warrants arrested: At 5:18 p.m. Feb. 9 in the 30000 block of 13th Place South, police were notified that a woman with active warrants had been seen at her father’s house. Two police officers were dispatched. According to the report, the two officers observed the father’s house from behind some bushes, and waited for the woman to come out. The woman eventually exited the residence, at which the time the officers approached her and detained her without incident.

• Shoplifting just to shoplift?: At 12:08 a.m. Feb. 10 in the 100 block of SW Campus Drive, loss prevention officers at a store called for police assistance with a shoplifter they had in custody. According to the report, the suspect had been caught stealing a food item valued at $6.12.

• Angry bicyclist ends up with lifetime ban from mall: At 12:04 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 1900 block of South Commons, a man slashed the tires to his own bicycle in front of a number of people at The Commons Mall. According to the report, the man said he did it out of frustration over the fact his bike had broken down on him again. The man was permanently trespassed from the mall.

• Copper wire thieves: At 4:53 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 32000 block of 25th Avenue South, a man reported that his work vehicle had been broken into. According to the report, the thieves stole a two-way radio and two spools of copper wire. The total value of the items stolen was approximately $3,500.

• Chihuahua survives pit bull attack: At 6:04 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 27000 block of Pacific Highway South, it was reported that a pit bull had bitten a chihuahua twice, resulting in an injury to one of the chihuahua’s rear legs.

• Mail thief: At 8:44 p.m. Feb. 10, in the 33000 block of 18th Lane South, an unidentified suspect was observed using a pry bar to break into a large, communal mailbox. According to the report, there was video surveillance of the suspect sent to Federal Way police for review.

• Man believes he’s being followed: At 9:22 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 33000 block of Pacific Highway South, a man called police to report his belief that he was being followed by five separate vehicles. According to the report, the man believed the vehicles were following because of his girlfriend. Police contacted the girlfriend, who stated there were no serious issues in their relationship.
