Police are investigating after a 9-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the abdomen on Wednesday night, according to police.

Shortly after 9 p.m., Federal Way officers were dispatched to a report of an accidental shooting at an apartment complex in the 35700 block of 16th Avenue S., according to FWPD Cmdr. Kurt Schwan.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a 9-year-old female with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen, he said. Officers provided first aid until medics arrived. The girl was then transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Family members on scene say the shooting was accidental.

This is an active incident and officers are continuing to investigate.
