A number of basketball and other courts will get a facelift in the near future, after the Parks and Recreation/Human Services/Public Safety committee approved the go-ahead for a resurfacing project for approximately $49,600.

“The only court we’ve actually done since the city incorporated was Sacajawea (Middle School),” said Steve Ikerd, parks and facilities manager during the committee’s Aug. 13 meeting. “So all these other courts have not been done. You can tell they’ve been loved to death, they’re really worn, especially the Saghalie basketball court.”

The courts that will be resurfaced include the aforementioned basketball court at Saghalie Middle School, the SW 312th Street Sports Courts, and the courts at Adelaide Elementary.

Committee member Jeanne Burbidge asked public works director Cary Roe what the life expectancy is for these court surfaces.

“It depends on use,” Roe said. “Saghalie is probably the youngest of the group, and it’s probably the most worn. So, just time on the ground, isn’t the only parameter,” he said. “It’s really a function of use, how heavily it was used. And when you put it on a school site, that has an influence as well, because you have the school use during the day, as well as after school and the weekends…It’s really a variable you have to pay attention to over time, and you have to ask yourself, ‘Does it look good? Is it easy to play on?’”

The city will sign into a purchase agreement with the King County Directors Association and a contract with the FieldTurf/Beynon company, contingent upon council approval in September.
