2010 National Merit Scholarship Program
On Sept. 16, officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They included Thomas Jefferson High School student Ian Brown, one of only 10 Washington semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Brown is a full International Baccalaureate student and a member of the school’s math and soccer teams.
SAT review scheduled at DeVry
To prepare high school students to achieve high marks in their upcoming SAT exams, DeVry University/Federal Way is offering a no-cost, one day SAT Mathematics and Writing/Critical Reading Review. Ride the school bus Oct. 2–8
If your child is eligible to ride the school bus, the district encourages you to make sure he or she does so during the week of Oct. 2-8. School district transportation departments receive annual state funding, which is determined by a one-week count of all eligible bus riders. Help support Federal Way schools and students by allowing your bus rider to take the bus during count week.
Life After High School
The Federal Way School District will host its annual Life After High School Career and College Fair from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Todd Beamer High School, 35999 16th Ave. S. All five high schools will be participating. Representatives from colleges, technical and specialty schools, trades offering apprenticeships, and the military will be on site to answer questions. Seminars will cover topics including scholarships, financial aid, college admissions, SAT/ACT, and personal essays. This event is for all parents and students. HCC leader wins top honor
Highline Community College’s Jonathan Brown has been awarded the highest honor for student program professionals who work at Washington state community and technical colleges.
The Lori Rhett Professional Award honors an individual each year for outstanding achievement in the field of student programs and leadership development. The award was established in 1997 in memory of the late Lori Rhett.
Brown began his student services career at the University of Redlands in Redland, Calif., then spent six years at Edmonds Community College, working as a student activities assistant, residential life manager and finally as a student life supervisor. Before he came to Highline, he also was the director of student programs at Shoreline Community College. He has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and English, and a master of arts in student development administration from Seattle University.
