In an effort to promote safety, free gun lockboxes will be given away at Federal Way’s Town Square Park on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, Progress Pushers, and King County Regional Office of Gun Violence Prevention are teaming up to give away 150 lockboxes at the park, 31600 Pete von Reichbauer Way S.
Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Community Integration Program Manager Cynthia Ricks-Maccotan said they will be giving away one lockbox per household, and the person receiving the lockbox must be 18 or older. Additionally, she said free food, resources, and information on gun safety will be provided.
“We want to promote firearm safety, right? So that means locking it up. That means storing your ammunition separate from the firearm. And that means putting those firearms in safe places where others, children and anyone with neural differences, could find it easily and hurt themselves or someone else,” Ricks-Maccotan said. “We are trying to reduce tragedies, firearm-related injuries, and tragedies. We want to decrease that, and so one way we can do that is to make sure that people have the safety devices to store their firearms.”
