For the first time, South King Fire and Rescue officials will be offering free CPR training at the Farmers Market Family Safety Day on Saturday, July 19.
The two sessions will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and will include a lesson in how to use an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, as well.
“In 20 to 30 minutes we can teach people to save lives,” said Jeff Bellinghausen, the community affairs officer with South King Fire and Rescue.
Bellinghausen said he hopes to see 100 or more participate. People will earn their certification cards after the training.
Bellinghausen said the class is aimed at adults, as participants need to be able to compress someone’s chest about two inches.
“Eighty percent of people have cardiac arrest in their own home, so [it’s important] to be able to do that for loved ones,” he said, noting there’s no fee, books and only a brief lecture in the training.
Those learning CPR will practice on one of the 10 mannequins or eight simulators provided.
“South King Fire and Firefighters Local 2024 are committed to putting this skill in the hands of our citizens,” Bellinghausen wrote in an email.
Family Safety Day, which is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Federal Way, the Federal Way Police and South King Fire and Rescue, will also include K-9 demonstrations at 1 p.m. with Roscoe and Kaiser. There will be craft projects by Home Depot, free helmet fittings, emergency preparedness information, emergency kits, neighborhood safety and crime prevention and Home Security will be onsite as well.
Family Safety Day will be from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m., July 19, at the Federal Way Farmers Market, located at the southwest corner of the Commons near Pacific Highway and South 324th Street.
