Boeing Employees Credit Union (BECU) recently announced that 49 schools in Washington state were the recipients of more than $100,000 in educational grants.

Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) had four schools receive grants: Brigadoon Elementary, Decatur High School, Olympic View Elementary and Wildwood Elementary.

According to BECU, the grants from their program are aimed at promoting student excellence. BECU Senior Vice President of Member Strategies Tom Berquist said this year’s winners were all deserving of the grants.

“BECU School Grants allow us to support programs that previously lacked the funding to get started,” Berquist said. “We love awarding grants that can make an impact on student success and are inspired every year by the schools who receive the grants.”

The grants can total up to $2,500, and are awarded in three categories: Financial Literacy, Environmental Sustainability, and Technology Tools.

In the case of the FWPS, most of the grants are aimed at technology tools. Brigadoon Elementary will use the grant to purchase a set of “ActivExpressions response units,” which help promote student engagement and give teachers immediate feedback on student achievement. Olympic View Elementary  is set to purchase an online math program aimed at helping students between grades 3 and 5 who are struggling with math.

Wildwood Elementary is slated to purchase iPads for “small reading and math groups,” while Decatur High School is using the grant money to give students the opportunity to attend the Junior Achievement Finance World in Auburn.
