Elected mayor:
Accountability Comes to Town (ACT) will sponsor a community meeting regarding the Feb. 19 vote to change Federal Way’s form of government to include an elected strong mayor. The meeting will start at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at Decatur High School, 2800 S.W. 320th St. Guest speaker Wes Crago, the city administrator in Ephrata, Wash., will explain his views on the strong mayor system and how it differs from Federal Way’s form of government.

Prevent auto theft in Federal Way:
Federal Way Police Department would like to remind citizens that leaving their vehicles running and unattended increases the chances of automobile theft.
In 2006, 17 vehicles that were running but unattended were stolen, according to a Nov. 2 police media release. This year, 12 running unattended vehicles have been stolen thus far, according to the release.
Though the onset of cold weather often brings more people to leave their vehicle running and unattended as it warms, doing this is against state law RCW 46.61.600 and punishable with a $124 fine, according to the release.
Attending to one’s vehicle as it warms will assist police in decreasing auto theft in Federal Way, according to the media release.
Registering one’s vehicle with the city’s “Watch Your Car” program, using a steering wheel lock or club, keeping doors and windows locked and closed, and abstaining from leaving one’s valuables, such as a purse or wallet, in the vehicle will also help reduce auto theft, according to the release.

Lockdowns:
Federal Way police, with the help of a K-9 unit, captured a male suspect with an outstanding warrant about 9 a.m. Nov. 8.
The evening of Nov. 7, police had attempted to locate the suspect, Khalif Dean Toms, who had a warrant from the Department of Corrections, said police spokeswoman Stacy Flores.
At approximately 7:15 a.m. Nov. 8, police found Toms in his vehicle. A traffic stop was performed at the intersection of SW Dash Point Road and SW 312th Street. Toms fled the scene on foot, causing police to temporarily close access to SW Dash Point Road near the incident and request a lockdown at three nearby Federal Way schools, Flores said.
The schools, Adelaide Elementary School, Lake Grove Elementary School and Lakota Middle School, were locked down as a safety precaution, she said. The lockdowns were lifted and the road was opened after police arrested Toms without incident.

Performing arts center online survey:
Federal Way is requesting residents partake in its performing arts center feasibility study by participating in an online survey. The survey will assist the consultants performing the study and allow them to better understand the city’s need for a performing arts center.
Those who wish to take the 15-question survey should do so before midnight Nov. 15.
