Flashing yellow arrow installed at S. 348th St. and 9th Ave. S.

Federal Way has installed its eighth flashing yellow arrow signal at 9th Avenue South and South 348th Street. The signal allows motorists to turn left when the left-turn arrow on the traffic signal flashes yellow and when it is safe to proceed. Motorists must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The signaling improves intersection safety and reduces traffic delays, according to a news release by the city.

The signal will be the first of its kind to operate based on time of day and traffic load. The intersection is busier than other areas of the city where the arrow is used. During heavier traffic loads, the arrow will not flash. It will maintain solid color changes. During these times, drivers will be signaled to proceed through the intersection when the arrow is green.

Flashing yellow arrows have been used since late 2006. For more information, contact traffic engineer Rick Perez at (253) 835-2740 or rick.perez@cityoffederalway.com.
