Federal Way resident Jevohn Woods choreographed and performed an original dance in Pacific Ballroom Dance’s spring concert “Let’s Get Loud” June 3-4 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center.
The contemporary number, called “Home to Her,” earned Woods the title of top choreographer at the Everett Gala Ball on March 26. Woods describes his piece as “the struggle of a man an inch from death and the girl is the reason he is alive and able to pull through. She helps him.”
Woods started putting his piece together last summer, when Pacific Ballroom Dance announced that they would hold auditions for a student-choreographed piece to be performed at the concert. He auditioned with a brief portion of choreography and a presentation of his idea and his piece was selected.
“It was a great opportunity to express creativity and express my own feelings and emotions and put it in to a dance instead of dancing something choreographed for us by coaches,” Woods said. “I love that I [had] the opportunity to dance it in concert and share it with everyone.”
Woods’ dance partner, Caroline DeFranco, 18, assisted him throughout the process, offering feedback and input along the way.
