Christian Jones, a decorated athlete who graduated from Federal Way High School on Saturday, was drafted on Tuesday by the Boston Red Sox in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Jones was taken on the last day of the draft in the 31st round with the 928th pick. According to Major League Baseball rules, the Red Sox will retain the rights to Jones until Aug. 16 or until he enters college.
Jones signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball this fall at the University of Washington on a scholarship. MLB rules state players who are drafted but don’t sign with their drafting team remain eligible for future drafts.
Whether he suits up for the Sox or not, being selected by a professional club is a fitting end to Jones’ high school sports career. This year alone, in his senior year at Federal Way, Jones was named the Gatorade Washington Baseball Player of the Year and was selected for the High School All-American squad. On the basketball court, Jones was named one of the Athletes of the Week for week 26 by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association as he helped the Eagles win their second consecutive state championship.
Jones was honored by the Federal Way Public Schools governing board Tuesday night for both his athletic achievements and his academic excellence.
“Christian is also a leader in the classroom and has maintained a 3.76 grade point average,” said board member Claire Wilson. “He’s also volunteered locally as a peer mentor and as a youth baseball coach…
“Congratulations and best wishes in all of your future plans, Christian. We’re very proud of you!”
Jones is a 6-foot-2 outfielder and first baseman who batted .446 and notched five home runs and 23 RBIs for the Eagles in the 2015-16 season.
