A high school teacher in Federal Way was arrested Oct. 1 on charges of sexual misconduct with a student.
A 17-year-old female high school student revealed that she and a teacher had been having a sexual relationship for the past two years.
The girl’s mother contacted police on Sunday, and police arrested the teacher at his home on Monday morning. The suspect, a 33-year-old teacher at Todd Beamer High School, was booked into King County Jail on charges of second-degree rape. He did not give a statement upon arrest, police report.
The teacher was arraigned Oct. 2 and released on his own recognizance. The teacher is on administrative leave from Federal Way Public Schools, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Mirror is not naming the suspect because he has not been charged with a crime.
According to police, the suspect had no prior criminal record. All teachers in the school district are required to pass a background and fingerprint check before employment.
According to Federal Way police, the relationship began when the girl was 15. The girl provided physical evidence of the relationship, said a police spokeswoman, who declined to give further details. A statement of probable cause reports there were four incidents of sexual intercourse, with the last incident allegedly occurring Feb 4, 2012.
The King County Prosecutor’s Office and Federal Way police are investigating the case. Police expect to file official charges in one to two weeks, the spokeswoman said.
Federal Way police urge any witnesses or possible victims to come forward. More information will be reported when available.
