The Federal Way Public Schools Board of Directors is involved in an active search for the district’s next permanent superintendent. On Oct. 28, 2014, the board voted to hire the search firm of Ray and Associates to conduct a nationwide search.
Stakeholder input was solicited in November and December of 2014 through a series of two public and nine small-group meetings, as well as community input from on-line and telephone surveys. Using that input, the executive search firm of Ray and Associates developed a profile detailing the qualities and characteristics being sought in the next superintendent.
On Dec. 16, 2014 the board approved the following qualities and characteristics.
Federal Way Public Schools seeks a superintendent who:
• Inspires trust, has high levels of self-confidence and optimism, and models high standards of integrity and personal performance.
• Possesses the leadership skills required to respond to the challenges presented by an ethnically and culturally diverse community. Is a strong communicator whether speaking, listening or writing.
• Possesses the ability to enhance student performance, especially in identifying and closing or narrowing the gaps in student achievement.
• Is strongly committed to a “student first” philosophy in all decisions.
• Possesses excellent people skills, presents a positive image of the district and will listen to input and make a decision when necessary.
• Is able to build consensus and commitment among individuals and groups with emphasis on parental involvement.
• Is capable of developing both short and long-range district goals.
• Is able to lead a large organization dedicated to the goals of continuous improvement and has successful experience in sound management practices, including appropriate participation of others in planning and decision-making.
