Two Federal Way ROTC cadets have done what few in the country have done: They qualified for honors-level air force camps.

Federal Way High School junior Masami Villa and Todd Beamer High School sophomore James Lezcano were selected to attend specialized U.S. Air Force camps this summer.

Both Lezcano and Villa were selected with grade-point averages that put them in the top one-half of 1 percent of all ROTC cadets in the country.

Villa will attend an honors-based medical camp in June at the University of Oklahoma.

“I’ll be missing a week of school, but hopefully I will be done with finals,” Villa said.

Villa hopes to go on to the University of Washington after graduating and become a pediatrician one day.

Lezcano is attending an aeronomics camp in July at the New Mexico State University. He will attend lectures from professors and learn about the parts of planes.

“I am excited to meet new cadets from all over the country,” Lezcano said.

Lezcano plans to join the Air Force Academy after high school and become a pilot.

Nationwide, 979 cadets were nominated for the camps, and 432 were selected.

Those selected for the camps had high math and science grades (the subjects the Air Force looked at most closely) as well as recommendations from their superiors.
