Federal Way has been taken off the list of potential sites for a garbage transfer station.
City leaders and residents have voiced concerns over King County building a new garbage transfer station on South 320th Street, just east of Interstate 5 in an unincorporated area.
Doug Williams, a spokesman for the county’s department of natural resources and parks, said Federal Way is officially off the table. The county will move forward with remaining potential sites in Auburn and Algona, which is home to the current transfer station that’s due for replacement.
“It just came down to something that made the Auburn and Algona sites more favorable,” Williams said, noting no specific reason for Federal Way’s removal from the list.
The Federal Way City Council sent letters to King County Executive Dow Constantine, expressing concerns over traffic and congestion that such a transfer station could bring.
Auburn officials have voiced opposition to having the station in their city as well. Click here to read more.
In July, King County opened its Bow Lake transfer station on Orillia Road in Tukwila. The station includes recycling, scrap metal and yard waste services.
