Federal Way police searching for missing 70-year-old man

UPDATE: David Leek has been found safe. Tacoma Police located him in near the waterfront around 4 p.m. on Friday, June 5.

Police and family members searching for a 70-year-old Federal Way man who has been missing since June 4.

David W. Leek, 70, went for a walk on the BPA Trail in Federal Way around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon and did not return home, according to a social media post by family member Ariana Stanley.

Stanley, Leek’s daughter, said her father has Alzheimer’s disease and a passion for the outdoors. Some walkers on the trail told Stanley they saw him on the trails around 2 p.m., but no one reported seeing him at the trail’s exits.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, Federal Way officers conducted an extensive area search last night at the time the department was notified of Leek’s disappearance, said FWPD Cmdr. Kurt Schwan.

Leek was entered in the national database as a missing person June 4.

Police are requesting assistance from the community in locating Mr. Leek, Schwan said. Officers are currently re-canvassing the area around his residence and the BPA trails.

FWPD is also waiting to hear back from King County Search and Rescue on their availability, he added.

The last time Leek went missing, Stanley said, he ended up knocking on someone’s door in Dash Point and said he was lost for more than eight hours.

Leek does not have a phone, but is wearing a medical ID bracelet with contact information, Stanley said.

David Leek is approximately 165 pounds and 5’9-10” tall with salt and pepper short hair and is wearing rectangular wire glasses. He was last seen wearing a light denim shirt, jeans, black sneakers with white trim, and a black and white lanyard with a house key and a white electronic badge key.
