A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. March 26 at Christian Faith Center, 33645 20th Ave. S., for Federal Way police officer Brian M. Walsh.

Walsh died from a heart attack on March 21 while on duty. Walsh and other officers were dispatched at 1:15 a.m. March 21 to a suspicious vehicle located in the 33300 block of 26th Avenue S.W. The SUV was reported as stolen by the King County Sheriff’s Office. Two individuals were sleeping in the back.

As the officers approached, applied vehicle stopping devices and initiated verbal commands, the driver of the vehicle started the engine and began to flee against the verbal commands of officers. It struck three police vehicles. Officers fired shots.

The vehicle was found nearby. The driver was found hiding in a carport area of a residence and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect suffered a non-life threatening bullet wound to his arm and was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

While this officer-involved shooting incident was being investigated, Federal Way police officers maintained a perimeter around the crime scene. At approximately 6:45 a.m., Walsh was found collapsed in his patrol vehicle.

Federal Way police officers initiated CPR, which continued with the arrival of the King County Medic One unit. Officers and medics were unable to revive Walsh, who was pronounced dead at approximately 7:21 a.m. Saturday. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office reported Monday that Walsh died of probable acute cardiac dysrhythmia (heart attack). Manner of death is considered natural, the office said.

A police procession will precede Walsh’s memorial. Federal Way law enforcement and family are invited to participate. All other guests are asked to go directly to Christian Faith Center for the service. The advised route to the memorial is as follows: From Interstate 5 North or South, take exit 142b, or South 348th Street) and turn right (north) on Enchanted Parkway (16th Avenue South). Turn right at the sign reading “police funeral.” Police Explorers will assist with entrance and parking.

Walsh, 34, had been a police officer for over eight years. He had been with the Federal Way police for four and a half years. In 2005, he received an honorable discharge from the Air National Guard.

Walsh is survived by his wife, two children and extended family. Walsh’s third child is due in May. A memorial fund has been established for him by the Federal Way Police Officer’s Guild.
