Federal Way offers utility tax rebate program

Low-income senior citizens and residents with disabilities can apply for a rebate on their utility taxes through Federal Way’s Utility Tax Rebate Program.

The program covers the city utility tax component on gas, electricity, telephone, cellphone, garbage/recycling and cable TV charges.

The city reports that last year’s rebates averaged $123. Applications will be accepted through April 30.

Applicants must live within city limits and meet the federal government’s maximum allowable income limits: $30,800 for a one-person household, $35,200 for two, $39,600 for three, and $44,000 for four-person families. Required documents include a tax return or bank statements, and all customer utility bills from 2012.

Low-income seniors must be 65 or older. Low-income disabled persons must establish disability status for all or part of 2012 by providing one of the following: proof of Social Security disability income, proof of supplemental security income, or a physician’s disability certificate.
