The City of Federal Way is offering $68,000 in matching funds to businesses, groups and organizations interested in preparing for emergencies and disasters.

The funds come from a 2007 allocation of $1.5 million that was set aside by the city council following the December 2006 storm. Three organizations were awarded $100,000 last year. They conducted five emergency preparedness projects.

Applicants must operate out of Federal Way. Non-profits and faith-based organizations are welcome, as well as other groups and businesses, to apply.

Grant funding is split into three categories:

• Emergency shelters: $30,000 will be set aside for projects aimed at developing or enhancing emergency shelters or warming/cooling centers.

• Overall emergency preparedness: Approximately $24,000 will be awarded to projects that contribute to the community’s overall emergency preparedness.

• Emergency communications: About $14,000 will be awarded to projects that improve emergency communications or notification systems.

Awards will range from $2,000 to $30,000. Applications must be postmarked by April 30. Awardees will be chosen June 18. Projects must be completed by July 1, 2011.
