A 14-year-old Lakota Middle School student was arrested Nov. 20 for her involvement in a threat to attack students at the school with firearms and explosives later that afternoon.
The Federal Way Police Department came to Lakota Middle School after school administrators received an email from a self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) member who threatened to attack students at the school.
In response to the threat, school administrators immediately placed the school into lockdown.
Port of Seattle bomb squads responded and swept the school for explosives prior to the students being released, according to documents filed in King County Superior Court.
The documents say the girl came forward and admitted she was behind the incident. She told police she had been involved in “swatting,” a new fad among gamers in which a person anonymously files a false police report, such as a murder or bomb threat, in hopes of provoking the police to raid an individual’s home or business.
The 14-year-old said it started when she began messaging her boyfriend, “Ryan,” while playing Call of Duty on Xbox live.
Over the course of their relationship, the girl said that she and her boyfriend communicated frequently using a KiK messenger application on her smartphone and on Skype, but had never met in person.
She told police “Ryan” had previously described himself as a 16 or 17-year-old male who lived in Orange County, California.
The girl told police she did not have a phone number, email address or Facebook profile for her boyfriend.
Police reported they discovered the threatening message was received from someone using the email address isusofficial@yandex.com.
A cursory revealed that Yandex.com is a Russian search engine offering free email services to clients.
The Lakota student said “Ryan” told her he “swatted” a school in California and a home in Vancouver, Wash. She admitted she told “Ryan” he should “SWAT her school, because she didn’t like school very much and thought it would be funny,” according to the police report.
The girl said she received a picture from her boyfriend the next morning with an email threatening the school.
“The student was emergency expelled immediately,” said Debra Stenberg, a spokeswoman with the school district. “And we are in the process of sending a letter out to our parents about making sure their children are being safe online.”
The 14-year-old disclosed that on two separate occasions she sent “Ryan” several nude images of herself through the KiK messaging application on her smart phone, per his request.
Police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said the investigation is still active.
The girl was booked into the King County Juvenile Detention Center in Seattle. Charges for threats to bomb or injure property are pending with the juvenile King County prosecutor, Schrock.
Federal Way police reported they are attempting to locate “Ryan.”
They spoke with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and learned that two days prior to the Federal Way incident, their SWAT team responded to a residence in the Vancouver area after a person called 911 and told dispatchers they had just shot their mother.
After breaking into the residence, Clark County police determined the call was a hoax, initiated by an unknown third party.
Police reports state that a month prior, Heritage High School in Brentwood, California received anonymous threats from someone threatening to bomb and shoot up the school if money was not delivered.
On the same day that SWAT officers responded to the call from the house in Clark County, Heritage High School received an anonymous email threat, which police say contained language identical to the email that Lakota Middle School received.
The Heritage High School incident is reportedly being investigated by the FBI and the Brentwood, California police department.
The Lakota student’s phone and Xbox are currently being forensically examined for evidence and for leads to “Ryan.”
