A Federal Way man who allegedly robbed a 72-year-old woman and caused her to break a vertebra in her back was handed 13 charges.
On Jan. 29, Madden McGraw, 18, was charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a stolen firearm and 11 counts of second-degree identity theft. When serving a warrant at McGraw’s home, law enforcement found Seattle Police Department body armor, handguns, a rifle, rifle magazines and a taser, according to charging documents.
According to documents, McGraw and another 15-year-old Federal Way boy, referred to as JW, were involved in numerous fraudulent purchases, robberies, car prowls and burglaries throughout King County in cities such as Bellevue, SeaTac, Federal Way, Auburn and Covington.
The victims’ credit cards were used at the Outlet Collection Mall in Auburn at JD Sports, The Fragrance Outlet and Polo Ralph Lauren. According to documents, McGraw and JW used stolen credit cards at the Outlet Collection Mall and various other stores and gas stations, where surveillance footage and cellphone data linked the pair to the crimes.
“The defendant is an obvious danger to the community,” documents state. “He caused substantial harm to the elderly victim while taking her purse, and he possessed a small arsenal of stolen weapons in his residence.”
Allegations
The first of the alleged crimes began on Jan. 6. At about 5:40 p.m., a person believed to be JW was driving a stolen Toyota Camry, and McGraw, who was in the passenger seat, robbed a 44-year-old woman at a Bellevue QFC, 10116 NE 8th St. Documents state that the Toyota Camry drove past the lady, and then the passenger reached out and grabbed the victim’s purse.
The victim said she tried to retain her purse, but it was ultimately taken. She said she had $1,000, along with $17,000 in money orders, credit cards and her driver’s license in her purse. An officer subsequently found her purse on the ground nearby, and all the items were gone except the money orders.
JW and McGraw would then commit a second robbery against a 72-year-old woman on Jan. 10 at a Bellevue H-Mart, 100 108th Ave. NE, documents state. According to documents, police dispatch advised that a female was gasping on the phone in some sort of obvious distress.
When police arrived on the scene, the 72-year-old woman said that a man, who is assumed to be McGraw, tried ripping her purse from her, dragging her about three feet before the man pushed her to the ground, causing her pain, according to documents. It was later found that this robbery caused her to break a vertebra.
According to documents, the pair got gas in Federal Way and were later spotted in the early hours of Jan. 11 at the Silver Dollar Casino in SeaTac, where surveillance footage would show them car prowling. The Toyota Camry the pair was using was located on Jan. 13 abandoned in Federal Way, according to documents.
Police found ammunition, a pistol magazine, a holster, body armor and multiple credit cards inside the vehicle, according to documents. They found the credit cards of the Jan. 6 Bellevue robbery victim and the Jan. 10 robbery victim’s credit card, alongside multiple others credit and debit cards.
A Federal Way Police Department school resource officer saw photos of JW and McGraw and positively identified them, citing that he had interacted with them on several occasions.
On Jan. 27, SWAT officers went to the apartment where McGraw lived with his father and subsequently arrested McGraw. Officers searched the apartment and located clothes that matched the ones worn in surveillance footage and 99 stolen debit or credit cards, according to documents.
They also discovered a .308 stolen Winchester Rifle, an unknown manufacturer 5.56 rifle with no serial number and an attached shell casing catcher, a stolen Glock .45, a stolen Glock 19, and a Glock 43 with a loaded drum magazine. They also located over 10 semi-automatic rifle magazines, Seattle Police body armor, ballistic helmet, gas mask and taser.
McGraw is being held at the King County Correctional Facility on a $250,000 bail. McGraw’s next court appearance is an arraignment hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 12.
