King County prosecutors charged a Federal Way man on June 1 with molesting two young girls he frequently babysat.
Christopher Michael Dona, 45, is being held on $200,000 bail for two counts of first-degree child molestation. Federal Way police arrested Dona on May 27 after receiving reports from two women.
According to charging documents, on May 24, one of the victims, a 9-year-old girl, approached her sister, who is her legal guardian. She told her sister that her “hoo-hoo” hurt. After questioning her about her hygiene habits, her guardian asked if anyone had touched her. The girl said “no” but began to tear up, then revealed, in tears, that Dona had “put his hands down her pants and he did that a lot.”
The victim was under Dona’s care around 10 times a month. He would babysit her and other young girls frequently at his Federal Way apartment located in the 2100 block of South 336th Street in Federal Way.
On May 25, officers met with the another woman who said her daughter also reported being touched by Dona. The two women had met at a local mall that day to discuss the abuse, which prompted the second woman to ask her 6-year-old daughter if Dona had ever abused her.
Charging documents state the 6-year-old girl said Dona placed his hand “down there” and touched or rubbed her while he babysat her. She also told her mother that he would sometimes come out of the bathroom with his penis out and place it on her vagina. During the conversation with her mother, the girl made comments such as, “I don’t want him to go away” and “they’re gonna take him away.”
The woman immediately took her daughter to the hospital to get a sexual assault exam.
After police had arrested and read Dona his Miranda rights, he agreed to an interview.
During the questioning, Dona told police he thinks the 9-year-old girl is “too touchy” and that she and her sister are “always climbing all over him.” He said he thinks she is “taking advantage of the whole situation because they don’t have a mother and father that take care of them.” Dona also alleged the girl had once asked him to rub her private area but he had her sister check her out.
Detectives asked if he had ever touched the girl. Dona replied that one night the 9-year-old and her sister spent the night and were jumping on him and he may have touched the victim once or twice but not intentionally. Dona then added, it’s hard when the little girls are “throwing themselves at me.”
Dona said he babysits the 6-year-old, whom he described as a “little spitfire” who is shy but “will never let you forget that you ‘fricking’ know her.” He told police the 6-year-old likes jumping around and that she and the 9-year-old don’t get along because they’re always fighting for his attention.
According to charging documents, Dona said he “feels bad” for the younger girl because she said her father was dead and asked Dona to be her father.
“He stated the girls he babysits appear to be neglected,” court documents state, noting he babysits three other young girls.
Officers informed Dona that the 6-year-old accused him of abuse, which he denied. He then gave two past examples of horseplay in which he accidentally touched the girl’s genitals because he wasn’t wearing his glasses, but he said he apologized to her.
When asked about coming out of the bathroom with his genitals exposed, Dona responded, “Not that I know of.” He said he might have been “really drunk or high” and had done so but said it was a while back and he was embarrassed by it.
On May 31, the 9-year-old victim participated in a “forensic child interview” and reported that the abuse began when she was 7 or 8 years old, often occurring while she and Dona were alone or when they were watching movies or playing video games. She alleged Dona would also make her touch him under a blanket, and that when he touched her she would become sore and need a warm washcloth to relieve the pain. She told detectives the abuse made her “scared, confused and worried” and said she’s mad for what he had done but still has feelings of love and “did not want him to go away.”
The 9-year-old victim’s legal guardian informed police that Dona had once when she was younger inappropriately touched her after she climbed into bed with him, but she reacted by telling him that she wasn’t who he thought she was, and the abuse ceased.
Dona has been convicted of fourth-degree assault in 2006 and 2009. He’s violated a no contact order and was convicted of third-degree theft in 2010.
Prosecutors said they are “extremely concerned for any you child to be in contact” with Dona and are seeking a Sexual Assault Protection order for the victims and all minors in general.
